Brigham Young University
Brigham Young University, in Provo, traces to Brigham Young Academy, founded in 1875, which was reorganized into Brigham Young University in 1903. BYU is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enrolled 35,873 students as of the 2024-25 academic year -- the largest religious-affiliated university in the country by enrollment, and central to Provo's economy and identity, though the city's economy extends well past the university.
University of Utah
The University of Utah, founded in 1850 as the University of Deseret and renamed in 1892, carries an R1 Carnegie classification for very high research activity. Its computer science department was one of the original four nodes on ARPANET, the U.S. military-funded network that became the technical ancestor of the internet, connected in 1969 alongside UCLA, Stanford Research Institute, and UC Santa Barbara. On December 2, 1982, University of Utah Medical Center was the site of the world's first permanent artificial heart implant, a Jarvik-7 device implanted in patient Barney Clark by Dr. William DeVries.
Utah Valley University
Utah Valley University, in Orem, is Utah's largest public university by enrollment and carries an official "dual-mission" designation from the Utah System of Higher Education -- combining open-enrollment community-college access with bachelor's and master's degree programs under one institution, a structural setup most public universities don't operate under.
Weber State University
Weber State University, in Ogden, houses the John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics, which carries AACSB accreditation -- a business-school accreditation held by only a minority of business programs worldwide. Weber State competes in the Big Sky Conference, an NCAA Division I conference spanning the Mountain West.
