Every item on this page clears one bar: not commonplace, not everywhere. These are real, named resources with an actual verified designation, accreditation, or documented distinction — not a generic "has a hospital" or "has a shelter" list. A shorter, accurate list beats a padded one, the same honesty standard used throughout this site.

Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden, open in some form since 1902 (as Lincoln Park Zoo from 1920), is accredited by both the Association of Zoos & Aquariums and the American Alliance of Museums — a dual accreditation most zoos don't hold. It's home to more than 2,000 animals across 500-plus species on 130 acres, including the 12-acre Expedition Africa habitat that opened in 2024, and drew more than 1.1 million visitors in 2024.
