Medical Specialty Care

Three designations that don't exist at a general community hospital, all concentrated in one academic health system: a verified Level I trauma center, an NCI-designated cancer center, and a freestanding comprehensive pediatric hospital with the state's only Level I pediatric trauma verification.

Every item on this page clears one bar: not commonplace, not everywhere. These are real, named resources with an actual verified designation, accreditation, or documented distinction — not a generic "has a hospital" or "has a shelter" list. A shorter, accurate list beats a padded one, the same honesty standard used throughout this site.
Oklahoma's only freestanding, comprehensive pediatric hospital; only Level I pediatric trauma center

OU Health Oklahoma Children's Hospital

OU Health Oklahoma Children's Hospital, in Oklahoma City, is Oklahoma's only freestanding, comprehensive pediatric hospital, and its trauma program carries the state's only Level I pediatric trauma center verification. It also runs Oklahoma's only comprehensive pediatric heart and heart-surgery program and the highest level of neonatal intensive care available in the state — specialty pediatric infrastructure that doesn't exist at a general community hospital.

Oklahoma's only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center; renewed 2023

OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center

OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center became Oklahoma's only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in 2018 and successfully renewed that designation in 2023 after a five-year review, ranking among the top 2% of cancer centers nationwide. It runs more than 300 active clinical trials, including the state's only Phase I clinical trial program, backed by more than $60 million a year in federal research funding across 400-plus projects.

Oklahoma's only Level I trauma center, ACS-verified

OU Health University of Oklahoma Medical Center

The University of Oklahoma Medical Center, OU Health's flagship hospital in Oklahoma City, houses Oklahoma's only Level I trauma center, verified by the American College of Surgeons — the highest trauma-care designation, requiring round-the-clock in-house specialist coverage and ongoing research and outreach that a Level II or III center isn't required to carry. OU Health itself, formed in 2020 by unifying OU Medicine and the OU Health Sciences Center, is Oklahoma's only comprehensive academic health system.
