Sandy grew up in the 1860s and 1870s as a supply station for silver mining in nearby Little Cottonwood Canyon, and for a couple of decades it was the territory's most significant smelting center, home to the Flagstaff, Mingo, and Saturn smelters; its main street was lined with "hotels, saloons, and brothels serving miners," in the words of one local history (Wikipedia). Sandy's Latter-day Saint residents incorporated the town in 1893 largely to gain municipal authority over that transient mining-camp element; once incorporated, the population shifted toward families oriented around "Church, farming, business, and family," the same account notes.

Sandy stayed a comparatively small, traditional town until the late 1960s, when it began growing rapidly outward into a sprawling suburb rather than the compact, downtown-centered pattern of its mining-camp origin. Outside those, the historic Sandy core along State Street closes early -- this remains a suburb organized around driveways and cul-de-sacs, not a walkable evening district, and people wanting one drive north to downtown Salt Lake City or Sugar House.

Getting around

Sandy's 43 Walk Score reflects real, honest car-dependence -- this is a post-1960s suburb built around driving, not a walkable historic core. The TRAX Blue Line's four Sandy stations, including one built directly into America First Field, give it a genuinely useful rail connection to downtown that many Wasatch Front suburbs lack, but day-to-day errands still run through a car.
