This category is deliberately empty for Raleigh-Durham, and that's worth saying directly rather than padding around it: the Piedmont Triangle is flat, landlocked, and a genuine drive from the mountains or the coast. Eno River State Park, Falls Lake, Jordan Lake, and William B. Umstead State Park are all real and worth visiting, but they're the same kind of pleasant, ordinary state-park and reservoir recreation found in most Southeastern metros — not gateway-town status to a national park or forest, not a cave system, not a hot spring, not genuinely climbable terrain. We checked specifically on Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, since it's sometimes mentioned informally for rock scrambling, but found no current, officially sanctioned climbing program there and no listing for it on the major climbing-route databases — not enough to back a real claim.
