Every item on this page clears one bar: not commonplace, not everywhere. These are real, named resources with an actual verified designation, accreditation, or documented distinction — not a generic "has a hospital" or "has a park" list. A shorter, accurate list beats a padded one, the same honesty standard used throughout this site.

The James Cancer Hospital

The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, Ohio State University's cancer hospital, holds Comprehensive Cancer Center designation from the National Cancer Institute -- a status requiring a depth of clinical and research infrastructure most cancer hospitals don't carry. After a 2014 expansion, The James, with 306 beds, became the third-largest cancer hospital in the United States, and it operates a 15-bed emergency department dedicated exclusively to cancer patients, described as the first fully integrated cancer emergency department in the country.

Nationwide Children's Hospital

Nationwide Children's Hospital has made U.S. News & World Report's pediatric "Honor Roll" for 12 consecutive years -- a distinction the publication awards to only 10 children's hospitals nationally -- with 2025-26 rankings that include top-10 national finishes in cancer (#5), gastroenterology and GI surgery (#4), nephrology (#4), neurology and neurosurgery (#8), and urology (#5). The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital is described as one of America's ten largest freestanding pediatric research centers, with a research history that includes the world's first rhinovirus reference center (1965) and, in 2006, the first human gene therapy trial for muscular dystrophy.

Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center operates a Level I trauma center, the highest tier of trauma-care designation, and has been recognized in U.S. News & World Report's "Best Hospitals" rankings for 29 consecutive years, most recently rated the best hospital in central Ohio and second-best statewide. Its College of Medicine ranked 33rd nationally among research medical schools in 2022 U.S. News rankings, and the medical center's own James Cancer Hospital carries the separate NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation described above.
