What Southtown is actually like
King William Historic District, the residential core of what's now called Southtown, developed between 1853 and 1866 as an enclave for prosperous German immigrant merchants who arrived as part of a larger wave of German settlement in Texas. Surveyor Ernst Hermann Altgelt built the neighborhood's first home and named its namesake street after Wilhelm I, King of Prussia and later German Emperor; architect Alfred Giles later designed several of the grand homes that still line King William Street. In 1972, the district became the first in Texas listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving more than 50 historic properties.
Through the mid-20th century the area's fortunes dipped along with industrial decline near the river, but a 1986 conversion of a former warehouse complex into what became the Blue Star Arts Complex changed the neighborhood's direction. Artist-run studios there launched the monthly First Friday Art Walk in 1994, now the city's longest-running monthly arts event, and the annual King William Fair -- running since 1968 as part of citywide Fiesta San Antonio -- further built the area's identity around arts and community culture rather than industry.
Southtown today is one of San Antonio's most walkable neighborhoods, with independent restaurants, bars, and breweries concentrated along South Alamo and South St. Mary's Streets and easy access to the Mission Reach trail along its eastern edge. Housing mixes restored Victorian and Craftsman-era homes in King William proper with newer townhomes and condos elsewhere in Southtown, drawing a blend of longtime preservation-minded residents, young professionals, and artists.
