It sits about 34 miles west of Raleigh and 17 miles south of Chapel Hill -- functioning as a bedroom community for the broader Triangle/Research Triangle Park region. In July 2025, the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal caused the Haw River at nearby Bynum Bridge to crest at a record 22.48 feet, breaking the previous record set by Hurricane Fran in 1996 -- flooding over 100 roads, collapsing a stretch of NC-902, and killing a Pittsboro resident who was swept off Farrington Point Road.
