Every item on this page clears one bar: not commonplace, not everywhere. These are real, named resources with an actual verified designation, accreditation, or documented distinction — not a generic "has a hospital" or "has a shelter" list. A shorter, accurate list beats a padded one, the same honesty standard used throughout this site.
AZA-accredited zoo, seven consecutive accreditations

Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society

The Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society, in West Palm Beach's Dreher Park, holds its seventh consecutive accreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) — a standard the AZA describes as the field's gold standard for animal wellbeing, conservation, and science, held by only about 238 of the roughly 2,800 animal exhibitors nationwide.

No-kill animal rescue league operating since 1924

Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League

Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League has served Palm Beach County since 1924 — over a century, funded entirely by donations with no city, state, or federal funding — and has sterilized more than 225,000 animals to date. Beyond adoption, its Pet Resource Center helps prevent surrenders by supporting owners facing homelessness, domestic abuse, or financial hardship, a scale of wraparound service well beyond a standard shelter's adoption counter.
