American Royal
Founded in 1899 as a cattle exhibition at the Kansas City Stockyards, the American Royal now stages what is documented as the world's largest barbecue contest each fall, alongside one of the Midwest's largest livestock and horse shows. Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium
An accredited member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium opened the $77 million Sobela Ocean Aquarium in 2023 after more than a decade of planning, housing roughly 8,000 marine animals across its 202-acre campus. KC Pet Project
KC Pet Project is the only open-admission, municipal animal shelter under contract to serve Kansas City, Missouri, taking in every animal regardless of health, age, or behavior. It converted the city's former shelter — which had euthanized about 70% of intakes — into a no-kill operation within six months, and has sustained a live-release rate above 90% even as annual intake climbed to 15,000–16,000 animals a year.
