MUSC Health Level I Trauma Centers

MUSC Health University Medical Center was the first hospital in South Carolina to receive Level I trauma verification from the American College of Surgeons, following an inspection reported in a 2012 Post and Courier article. MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital separately operates a verified Level I pediatric trauma center — giving MUSC dual adult-and-pediatric Level I verification on one downtown campus.

MUSC Hollings Cancer Center

Hollings Cancer Center became an NCI-Designated Cancer Center in 2009 and remains the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in South Carolina — one of 74 such centers nationwide.

American Burn Association-verified for both adults and children; one of about 40 such centers in the U.S. and Canada

MUSC Health South Carolina Burn Center

In August 2025 the MUSC Health South Carolina Burn Center earned American Burn Association verification for both adult and pediatric burn care, placing it among roughly 40 burn centers across the U.S. and Canada with that dual verification. Medical director Dr. Steven Kahn said MUSC is the only institution in the South Carolina and Georgia region holding both ABA-verified adult-and-pediatric burn care and Level I trauma designation for adults and children.
