Wendell was incorporated in 1903 as a small farming town in eastern Wake County, named for the poet Oliver Wendell Holmes. For most of the 20th century it stayed just that -- a small town built around agriculture, well outside Raleigh's day-to-day orbit.
That changed with Wendell Falls, a large master-planned community built on the town's edge that anchored a wave of subdivision construction through the 2010s and 2020s, alongside industrial investment from employers like Siemens and Kioti tractor-maker Daedong USA. The result: Wendell was North Carolina's fastest-growing municipality in 2026 and the 4th-fastest-growing in the entire country, with population estimated to have nearly doubled in five years.
Wendell's population went from 9,793 at the 2020 census to an estimated 19,687 as of July 2025 (U.S. Census Bureau). It's roughly 20 miles and a 25-minute drive east of downtown Raleigh via US-64, and while the town still markets itself as "Small Town, Big Charm" around its historic downtown, that population curve makes it hard to call Wendell anything but a fast-forming Raleigh exurb today.
