What Queen Creek is actually like
Queen Creek's name comes from a waterway more than 100 miles from town: Queen Creek, which runs at the base of the Silver Queen Mine near Superior and was originally called Picket Post Creek. Before that name migrated south to describe the local wash, this stretch of farmland was known as Rittenhouse, after a railroad siding near Rittenhouse and Ellsworth roads where C.H. Rittenhouse shipped produce starting in 1919 and where farmers flagged down trains bound for Phoenix. As rail traffic declined and the community grew, residents adopted the Queen Creek name instead. The town incorporated in 1989, still a modest farming community at the time.
Since then Queen Creek has become one of the fastest-growing towns in the country, with population roughly tripling from 59,519 at the 2020 census to an estimated 87,006 by 2025 — East Valley-leading growth as recently as 2024. The town straddles the Maricopa-Pinal county line, and new master-planned subdivisions now dominate what used to be cotton and alfalfa fields, drawing young families priced out of Gilbert and Chandler. A working-farm identity survives at Schnepf Farms and the Queen Creek Olive Mill, both popular agritourism destinations, while horse properties and larger residential lots remain common on the town's rural fringe.
