Houston Zoo — Attwater's Prairie Chicken Program

Houston Zoo has led the captive-breeding effort for the critically endangered Attwater's prairie chicken since 1994, operating a dedicated 24-pen breeding facility built in partnership with NASA at Johnson Space Center; the program has released more than 1,500 birds into the wild over three decades and received official AZA SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) designation in 2024.

Largest shelter-veterinary school partnership of its kind in the U.S.

Houston SPCA / Texas A&M Veterinary Partnership

Houston SPCA and Texas A&M's College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences run what the university describes as the largest partnership between an animal shelter and a veterinary school in the U.S. that goes beyond typical cat-and-dog care; Houston SPCA is also the only animal welfare organization in the country that serves all species — companion animals, livestock, exotics, and wildlife — on one campus, investigating over 9,000 cruelty cases a year.
