What Arvada is actually like
Arvada traces to June 22, 1850, when Lewis Ralston panned nearly $5 in gold from what's now Ralston Creek -- Colorado's first recorded gold discovery, officially recognized by the Colorado Historical Society in 1995. Benjamin Franklin Wadsworth platted a nine-block town on his land in 1863; his wife Mary Ann named it after brother-in-law Hiram Arvada Haskins. A town notice (population 100) posted in December 1870; incorporation followed in August 1904.
Arvada grew as a farming community renowned for Pascal celery -- shipped to the White House in the early 1900s, earning it the "Celery Capital of the World" nickname -- before becoming a Denver-adjacent residential suburb. Housing is a mix of mid-century ranch homes and newer development; population reached 124,402 at the 2020 Census, the 7th-largest city in Colorado. Olde Town Arvada, the historic core, sits about 7 miles northwest of the Colorado State Capitol -- a comparable distance to Union Station -- and today anchors the city's arts and dining scene.
