Coppell was first settled by James Parish in the mid-1800s and initially called Gibbs Station, after a local landowner; when the St. Louis, Arkansas & Texas Railway came through in 1888 the settlement became a rail hub, and in 1892 the town was renamed Coppell after George A. It incorporated in the mid-1950s and stayed a small farming town — cotton, wheat, peanuts, melons — into the 1970s, when DFW Regional Airport opened next door in 1974 and, as the state's own historical handbook puts it, "spurred rapid suburban expansion." Population went from 3,826 in 1980 to nearly 43,000 by 2020, almost entirely new construction radiating out from the older Old Town Coppell core near the original rail depot.
