U.S. National Whitewater Center
Opened in 2006 on 1,300 acres along the Catawba River, the Whitewater Center's engineered river channels — designed in part by three-time Olympian Scott Shipley — form the world's largest and most complex recirculating artificial whitewater river, pumping 12 million gallons of water through Class II-IV rapids; its open-air climbing wall is also cited as one of the largest outdoor climbing centers in the world.
