Charlotte's cultural scene includes multiple Smithsonian Affiliates and some of the only AAM-accredited museums in the Carolinas. These aren't just local favorites — they carry the same institutional vetting as major-city flagship museums.
Charlotte Museum of History
In late 2025, the Charlotte Museum of History was named one of only 8 organizations nationally selected to become a new Smithsonian Affiliate, joining a network of just over 200 institutions across the country that partner with the Smithsonian on exhibitions and collections access. It also won the American Alliance of Museums' 2025 Museum Impact Award, a national honor recognizing institutional excellence.
Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture
The Gantt Center is a longstanding Smithsonian Affiliate, one of roughly 200 institutions nationwide formally partnered with the Smithsonian Institution, and is one of the country's leading centers dedicated to African-American arts and culture, named for Charlotte's first Black mayor, Harvey B. Gantt.
The Mint Museum
The Mint Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, a distinction held by only about 1,095 of the nation's estimated 35,000 museums — AAM calls it "the field's gold standard for museum excellence." The Mint was reaccredited in 2022 and traces its roots to 1936 as North Carolina's first art museum.
Bechtler Museum of Modern Art
The Bechtler describes itself as the only museum in the Southern United States dedicated specifically to European and American modern art and its legacies, and it holds American Alliance of Museums accreditation (reaccredited 2025) — a designation only a small handful of Charlotte-area museums (Bechtler, the Mint museums, and Discovery Place) hold.
