What Grant Park is actually like
Grant Park takes its name from the 100 acres Lemuel P. Grant, an engineer and businessman, donated to the city in 1883 — making the park itself Atlanta's oldest, later redesigned by the Olmsted Brothers in 1903. Zoo Atlanta traces back to a failed circus: in 1889, local lumber merchant George Gress bought its animals and donated them to the city, and the zoo now draws more than a million visitors a year from the same park grounds.
The neighborhood's housing stock reflects its 1880s-to-early-1900s development: large two-story Victorian mansions face the park directly, with more modest Queen Anne homes, one-story cottages, and Craftsman bungalows on the surrounding streets. The Atlanta Cyclorama — a massive circular painting of the Battle of Atlanta — was displayed in the park for over a century, in a dedicated building from 1921, before it moved to the Atlanta History Center. Just next door in Summerhill, Center Parc Stadium — the converted former Turner Field, the Atlanta Braves' home until 2016 — now hosts Georgia State University's Panthers football team (NCAA Division I FBS, Sun Belt Conference). The Beltline's Southeast Trail, a paved 2.5-mile route that fully opened in April 2026, links Grant Park to Glenwood Park, Ormewood Park, and Boulevard Heights through the Krog Street Tunnel. Like Inman Park, Grant Park has carried City of Atlanta Historic District status since 2000, so exterior work on existing homes goes through the Urban Design Commission's Certificate of Appropriateness process rather than standard permitting alone.
