Relocating to Metro Atlanta: Employers, Commutes & New-Resident Basics

Last verified: September 2, 2026 — see the note on staying current at the bottom of this page.
This page is general information, not legal, tax, or relocation advice. Deadlines, tax rates, and program details below are set by state and county government and can change. Confirm current requirements with the Georgia Department of Driver Services, your county tag office, and the Georgia Department of Revenue before relying on any figure here.

1. Where the major employers actually are

Metro Atlanta's job base isn't concentrated in one downtown core the way some metros are — it's spread across several distinct office clusters, each with its own commute shed. Knowing which cluster your employer sits in is one of the most useful things to figure out before you pick a neighborhood, since it can be the difference between a 15-minute commute and an hour on I-285. A few of the largest, by no means exhaustive:

One live wrinkle worth knowing about: Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific have a pending merger working its way through federal Surface Transportation Board review, not yet closed as of this writing. No relocation of Norfolk Southern's Atlanta headquarters has been announced, but it's the kind of thing worth a quick search if you're weighing a commute to that specific employer years out.

2. Your driver's license: 30 days

New Georgia residents have 30 days from the date they establish residency to get a Georgia driver's license through the Department of Driver Services (DDS). In practice this generally means surrendering your out-of-state license, passing a vision screening, and providing proof of identity, Georgia residency, and Social Security number — DDS's own checklist is the authoritative source for exactly what to bring, since documentation requirements can change.

3. Vehicle registration, TAVT & emissions

Vehicles also need to be registered in Georgia within 30 days of establishing residency, through your county tag office. Georgia replaced the old sales-tax-plus-annual-ad-valorem-tax system with a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) paid at registration: the standard rate is 7.0% of the vehicle's fair market value, but new Georgia residents titling a vehicle they already owned before moving pay a reduced 3.0% new-resident rate instead.

Thirteen metro Atlanta counties require an annual emissions inspection before registration renewal: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale. (Note that Paulding County isn't one of the counties our neighborhood guides currently cover, but it's included here since it's part of the same emissions-testing zone.) If your county isn't on that list, no emissions test is required.

4. Registering to vote

Georgia uses a "Motor Voter" system: when you visit DDS to get your Georgia driver's license or state ID, you're automatically offered the option to register to vote (or update your registration) as part of that same visit, unless you opt out. You can also register separately online through the Georgia Secretary of State's My Voter Page, or by mail.

5. Georgia state income tax

Georgia has moved to a flat state income tax, currently 4.99% for the 2026 tax year. This rate is not fixed permanently — Georgia has been stepping it down gradually year over year under state law, so it's worth checking the Georgia Department of Revenue's current-year figure rather than assuming this exact number holds going forward.

6. How we keep this page current

The employer locations in Section 1 are verified against company and government sources as of this page's last-verified date above, but companies do relocate, merge, and expand over time. The deadlines and rates in Sections 2 through 5 are set by state law and can change from year to year — the income tax rate in particular is scheduled to keep changing. If you spot something on this page that's out of date, or notice a broken link, we'd like to know — see our contact information.
