What Dr. Phillips is actually like
The neighborhood is named for Dr. Philip Phillips (1874-1959), a Memphis-born citrus processor who held a medical degree from Columbia University and earned the nickname 'Doc.' He first tried Florida citrus farming in 1894 with $5,000 from his father, lost that grove to the Great Freeze, then rebuilt in Osceola County starting in 1897; by 1920 he controlled more than 5,000 acres of citrus groves across nine Florida counties and, starting in 1928, ran his own fruit-juice processing plant. Phillips bought a grove near Sand Lake in southwest Orange County and built out a company community there, including housing for Bahamian guest workers, which grew into the place that carries his name. He sold most of his citrus holdings in a 1954 split between Granada Groves and Minute Maid and, in 1953, founded the Dr. P. Phillips Foundation, which has since distributed more than $220 million in grants.
